This cocktail delivers over 20 grams of fiber. Taking one or two heaping tablespoons once or even twice a day can often regulate even the most difficult bowel.
Two fibers are selected. The first is psyllium mucilloid. This is a soluble fiber meaning it becomes gelatinous in water. It absorbs cholesterol in the bowel, lowers it in the blood and provides other health benefits. This fiber is available as Metamucil or at half the price with the pharmacy’s generic brand. It is usually labeled as a vegetable laxative which is only half true. It is a vegetable fiber but it is not a laxative. You can purchase the product with the Nutrasweet© sweetener or the Regular, which is sweetened with sugar. A side effect of any soluble fiber is that excessive intestinal gas may form. Citrucel, which is metabolized much less by colon bacteria, can be substituted if excessive gas is a concern.
The second fiber is Red Mill wheat bran. This fiber is non-soluble, meaning it is not broken down by the colon bacteria. It absorbs water and, like soluble fiber, increases bulk in the stool. Miller’s wheat bran can be found at health or nutrition stores, where possible, get the finely ground wheat bran.
The Cocktail:
| Psyllium Mucilloid | 1 heaping tablespoon |
| Red Mill Wheat Bran | 1 heaping tablespoon |
Stir vigorously with 4-6 ounces of any desirable flavored liquid. Fruit juices work just fine. For fewer calories you may mix it with water and add flavored Crystal Light. This drink provides over 20 grams of fiber, B vitamins, magnesium, a small amount of iron, 5 grams of protein, and about 20 calories.
The dose can be adjusted and split into two daily doses 8-10 hours apart. It is always best to start with small amounts of fiber and then increase it to tolerance – and drink plenty of water when using this supplement.
