Gastric Varices
Image 1
Stomach Varicose Veins
You are looking at the black endoscope as it comes into the stomach, has made a U-turn and is looking back at itself. Note the swollen dilated varicose veins around the black endoscope. These occur usually with cirrhosis of the liver where the blood from the intestines is detoured away from the liver to the upper stomach and esophagus on its way back to the heart. The veins eventually dilate. Bleeding is the feared complication.
