Image 1
Esophageal Diverticulum
A diverticulum is a pocket or balloon-like projection from the wall of the bowel. They occasionally occur in the esophagus, sometimes just above a stricture or narrowing. In this image you see the esophagus on the left which fades away into darkness as you look down the inside of this tube-like organ. On the right there is a diverticulum. This particular diverticulum was an incidental finding, causing no problem and needing no treatment. On occasion, some diverticulum will need to be surgically removed.
