Colon cancer is the second most common cause of cancer deaths in this country. It affects men and women equally. We do not know the true cause of colon cancer but genetics, diet, smoking and obesity increase one’s risk. If diagnosed early, before any symptoms occur, colon cancer can often be cured surgically. Unfortunately, many people go without screening. All patients over 40 years of age should be checked for microscopic gastrointestinal bleeding with a stool test. Colonoscopy is recommended for average risk patients over 50 years of age.
We have a designated web page for colon cancer screening, www.gicare.com/schedule. You may schedule a screening exam. If there are active or important medical problems, an office visit may be requested.
